Pouilly-Fuissé is the most distinguished wine appellation in the Mâconnais, making rich, full-bodied white Burgundy from Chardonnay in four communes: Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson.
Vincent Besson is one of the area’s most renowned producers. Everything about this wine is old-fashioned, from the gorgeous label to the golden colours and the round palette, to the nine-month ageing in oak and traditional vinification processes. It is tough to get hold of in the UK as it is barely exported at all with the French restaurant trade keeping almost all the wine.
The terroir supports a harmonious fulfilment of the ripeness of the grape and lets rich aromas develop, including hints of hazelnuts and toasted almonds. The ‘Au Clos’ vineyard imparts a distinct minerality to the wine, with a subtle smokiness that adds complexity. Rich, full of sap and fragrant, Pouilly-Fuissé should be powered and flavourful.
Nestled in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation in southern Burgundy, the village of Solutré-Pouilly is home to brothers Vincent and Pierre-Anton Besson, upholding the winemaking legacy established by their grandfather, Pétrus, in 1933. Through five generations of expertise, the Besson brothers continue to craft exceptional wines that honour their family's rich tradition.
