This wine is classic in its Rhône Viognier style and a lovely expression of the grape from the South West of France. The Cuilleron Viognier is most definitely in the Condrieu camp in all but name, and is far from childish! A restaurant wine not only as it appears on many lists around London, but also because Yves Cuilleron serves it at his excellent bistro in Ampuis.
Tantalising with its tangerine, peachy, mango notes, and so approachable yet refreshing, with such soft tannins and low acidity, the wine spends nine months in barriques on the lees with regular bâtonnage. Peaches, dried fruit and white flowers achieve brilliant balance in response to Viognier's low acidity.
This Viognier pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes such as seafood, poultry, vegetarian, whether it be citrus or creamy sauces.
Originally founded in 1920 by Claude Cuilleron, he was the first to plant vineyards in Northern Rhône. In the early days, grapes were sold to local cooperatives, and it wasn’t until 1960, when Antoine Cuilleron took over the estate did significant changes occur and they began bottling their own wines under the Cuilleron family name. In 1987, as fourth generation vigneron, Yves Cuilleron took over the reins from his uncle, and made further transformations, building a formidable reputation in recent years.
