2013 was such a great year in Sauternes, and this is so reasonably priced for its quality that I thought I should let you know about it. It is in halves of course, much easier, and you can always open a second!
Lieutenant de Sigalas is the second wine produced by the estate; offering an approachable and affordable introduction to Château Sigalas Rabaud, after its main Grand Vin Premier Cru Classé Sauternes.
Harvested after the affects of noble rot, and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, this sauternes is delightful, with a lovely floral character and rich, honeyed fruit.
This wine is perfect as an apéritif, or with a suprising variety of food, from foie to spicy noodles.
Richly entwined with the history of Bordeaux and its wine trade, the estate dates back to 1660 when the Rabaud family acquired the land, and in 1863 was sold to Henri Sigalas, where the estate was divided into two — Château Sigalas Rabaud and Château Rabaud-Promis. Perfectly situated on a small hill, overlooking Château d’Yquem, with just fourteen hectares, it is the smallest of all the Premier Cru Classé Sauternes’ properties. Vineyard plantings consist of 85% Semillon and 15% Sauvignon.
Six generations of the Sigalas family have maintained its reputation for producing exceptional Sauternes. Today, Laure de Lambert Compeyrot and her son, Jean Compeyrot, have great drive and determination to promote these special wines to a new audience.
