Château Siran, Margaux, 2017

A blend of mainly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a splash of Petit Verdot, they are aged in oak for a year before release. It’s charmingly aromatic, displaying fleshy blackberry, cherry, plum crumble, crème de cassis, leather, tobacco, spices and something of an English country garden in bloom, replete with herb patch.

92 points, “This is rather lovely, with excellent aromatics and fine tannins with a feeling of flex and precision. There is no question that the fruit has form and density, with focussed cassis and tobacco notes and some slate. This also lasts well on the palate. The fruit is at the fresher end of the scale, as is true across most wines in 2017, but it's clearly successful.”

Established in the 17th century, Château Siran’s fascinating history includes a period of ownership by the Toulouse-Lautrec family, and has a cellar built in the 1980s designed to withstand a nuclear explosion.

Acquired by the Miailhe family in 1859, it remains one of the few family-owned estates in the Margaux region. In 2007, Édouard Miailhe assumed leadership, continuing the family’s long-standing tradition of stewardship and innovation.The estate is celebrated not only for its wines but also for its cultural heritage, featuring a wine-tasting room, an art gallery, and a vintage bottle collection.
