An exceptional Chianti at a brilliant price, this should be hard to resist as a Whitfield Wines house wine. An absolute classic of a Chianti, and by far the best Aretini I have tasted at this price point.
Manucci Droandi is the blend of two families — the Manuccis and Droandis collaborating to further their success. The Mannuccis were landowners in Valdarno, at least from the early 19th century, and from the 18th century the Droandis were farmers in Carmignano, and it wasn’t until the late 20th century did they begin focusing their efforts on wine production.
Today, the estate continues to be family-run by Roberto Giulio Droandi, assisted by his wife, Maria Grazia Mammuccini and nephews Andrea and Matteo Mammuccini.
Each year the team select the best vines and carefully tend them minimising bunches per wine, pruning away excess foliage, and continually culling grapes to maximise the quality of the fruit that is harvested and soft pressed then, controlled fermentation. The wine are in oak barrels for a year then in-bottle for three months to balance body and aroma. Expect a rich ruby-red colour and essences of red fruits and nuances of herbs, earthiness and spice.
At an average altitude of 250m above sea level: the best possible production conditions which, along with suitable agronomical choices (land partially subjected to minimal cultivation, and partially with permanent grassing; cordon training and short spur pruning; foliage control in summer; bunch thinning; leaf thinning; harvesting in several stages), guarantee the highest quality grapes.
