Produced in the Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC region in Piedmont, this bottle lives up to the Conterno name with every single drop.
Decanter magazine called it a “Baby Barolo,” and it’s a must for anyone who loves brisk, old-school reds, especially since it comes with an astounding under–£25 per bottle price tag.
Pale garnet in the glass, filled with aromas of red cherry, strawberry, tar, fresh rose petals, and savoury herbs; a bright acidity refreshes the palate and integrates seamlessly with the silky tannins. It drinks beautifully with a slight chill, and is extremely versatile at the table, pairing wonderfully with earthy mushroom dishes, meats and aged cheeses.
Hailing from a winemaking family, co-founding Conterno-Fantino winery in 1982, Diego Conterno worked alongside esteemed winemakers Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino, helping to build the estate into a leading Barolo producer. Mastering his winemaking skills, Diego Conterno went on to establish his own winery in 2000 in Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, focussing on traditional Piedmontese varietals such as Dolcetto and Nebbiolo d’Alba, alongside his main production of Barolo. In the 2010s, Diego’s son, Stefano Conterno, joined the family business, leading the estate together to new heights.
