From the village of Bué, this wine hails from some of the finest terroir in the Sancerre appellation. Having spent a day tasting 2020s and 21s, I have switched away from the Dezat Sancerres, in favour of this wine from Balland and the wines of Sylvain Bailly (see Sancerre Rosé). Most white Sancerre should be enjoyed young and fresh; but a handful of growers believe that more complex, rich wines are possible.
Jean-Paul Balland makes one of Sancerre's greatest whites. He was one of the first Sancerre producers to use oak in his vinification - wow what a wine.
A refined Sauvignon Blanc showcasing ripe peach, pear, and citrus aromas with floral hints of honeysuckle, there is a subtle oak and minerality. Layers of stone fruits, citrus zest, and flint, this is an elegant and complex wine offering ageing potential.
Successors of a long lineage of winegrowers dating back to the 17th century, Jean-Paul and Magali Balland dedicated 40 years to cultivating and expanding the estate in the village of Bué in the famed Sancerre region of the Loire Valley. Now in the hands of their daughters, Elise and Isabelle, since 2001, the standards of this excellent estate remain as high as ever.
