Many Whitfield Wines customers love the Rasteau (La Soumade) we sell, rather than looking for other fuller body reds from Northern Rhône, I would suggest another Rhône beauty from the south, with the Gigondas name being so recognisable and it being in peppery contrast to all the Pinot Noir I have in the letter every time.
Gigondas is a brasserie favourite, and top quality Gigondas you would find in London brasseries at fair prices is a rarity these days, so please do stock up for consumption at home.
There is no de-stemming, and the wines have bags of fruit and guts. A deep, intense ruby hue sets the stage for ripe red and black fruit aromas, intertwined with wild Mediterranean herbs, pepper, and a touch of liquorice. The complex and full-bodied palate reveals layers of dark, juicy fruits balanced by earthy, spicy undertones, with subtle hints of leather and tobacco, pairing beautifully with equally rich and hearty stews, lamb, game meats, and dishes with aromatic herbs.
Situated in the heart of the Gigondas appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley of France, Domaine Burle began as a modest estate dedicated to showcasing the unique terroir of the region. Although less renowned than its neighbouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas has long been recognised for its potential by the Burle family since the 1930s. Damien and Florent Burle took over the management of the estate from their father, Edmond in 2004, embracing rusticity at its finest in their winemaking.
