I am often asked whether I would add a Côtes du Rhône to the list, and my response has been — that is a lot of tasting to find a decent one, and why not buy some Rasteau?
Well I succumbed, and am now offering this beauty as a typical Whitfield Wines house wine. Across many restaurants in London, including the Delaunay, Brasserie Zédel and the Wolseley, I am clearly not alone in appreciating this little belter. Domaine de l’Espigouette is an impeccable source of delicious wines which offer very good value and this is no exception.
A classic Côtes du Rhône, some of the vines used for this Vieilles Vignes Cuvée are over 80 years of age. Predominantly Grenache (70%), and the rest being made from Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan, the wine is aged for 12 months in concrete vats to produce a delicious, full-flavoured, old-fashioned, rich and spicy wine. You could describe it as pretty and sweet, totally unaggressive, yet, with tannins for structure. A brilliant red for the spring & summer months, lunch or evening, salads or lamb.
Domaine de l’Espigouette is nestled near the villages of Violès and Sablet, in the heart of the Rhône Valley, close to the renowned vineyards of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate benefits from an exceptional terroir, where soils composed of clay, limestone, and galets roulés (large round stones) enhance the wines' minerality and richness. Since 1921, the Latour family has carefully tended this land, with four generations shaping the estate’s legacy. Today, it is managed by Bernard Latour, alongside his wife, Marie-France, and their sons, Julien and Emilien.
