In 2019, I discovered another fantastic secret wine in Burgundy, from Côte Chalonnaise, between the Côte de Beaune to the north and the hills of the Mâconnais to the south. The Côte Chalonnaise is consistently producing brilliant wines at more sensible prices.
The wine delivers brilliantly on intensity and quality. Immensely pleasing for friends and guests, this drinks like a much more expensive wine from a grander AOC to the north. Maybe not quite every evening deluxe, but perfect for a special Saturday lunch or Friday evening with friends. This wine should always be in your cellar/under the stairs!
Crafted from Chardonnay grown on limestone-clay soils, it is a beautifully balanced and elegant white wine, opening with a bouquet of ripe citrus fruits, honey, and hazelnuts, delicately layered with subtle vanilla oak notes. On the palate, freshness from stones fruits of apple and pear is accented by hints of almond.
This wine’s creamy texture, balanced by a lively acidity makes a great match for fruits de mer or creamy lobster bisque, as well as poultry in rich, savoury sauces.
Studying Enology at the University of Dijon for one year was enough to convince François Feuillat-Juillot of her interest and passion for wine. In 1989, she joined a producer in Montagny-les-Bruxy, learning and helping develop the winery. When her associate passed away in 2002, François took over the management of the estate and eventually purchased the winery in 2004, forming her own domaine. In 2021, François’s daughter, Camille joined the family business.
