This wine is a brilliant example of what the very best and most established wine makers are currently doing in Beaujolais, and reflects what exciting wines can be found in the area. 2021 is the fourth vintage of Armand Heitz’ Juliénas; a Beaujolais made in the traditional Burgundian method. This is a nice ‘hybrid’ between flashy Beaujolais and old school Burgundy. I love Gamay, and this does not disappoint.

The domaine now has 20 hectares in 30 plots between Mercurey and Beaune. Then there’s 8 hectares in Beaujolais – 6 of which are Juliénas. The domaine has worked for five years in biodynamic fashion but Armand felt constrained and didn’t see as much benefit as he hoped

Made with 100% whole-cluster fermentation, no new oak, and minimal pumping over, this wine embraces a classic old-school Burgundian approach, offering a vibrant medley of mixed cherries, complemented by the subtle, nostalgic aroma of old barrels. It is all red and dark cherries, with balanced acidity, silky tannins, and some earthy notes. Perfect for the winter months, and such fantastic value.

The origins of Domaine Heitz-Lochardet trace back to the early 20th century, born from the union of the Heitz and Lochardet families. For much of its history, the estate focused on cultivating grapes, which were sold to local cooperatives and négociants. However, in the early 21st century, under the visionary leadership of Armand Heitz, the domaine began reclaiming its legacy by crafting its own wines, marking a new chapter of excellence and independence.
