From Southern Rhône comes Grenache at its very best with Châteauneuf-du-Pape, of course (and as many as 12 other varietals) and in Rasteau, nearby, I have found equally wonderful wines at a fraction of the price. Also available in magnums, you must try the Domaine la Soumade, Rasteau, 2021; this is a beautiful, perfect expression of plump juicy warming Grenache. Robert Parker described the estate as "The superstar of Rasteau…drop-dead delicious red wines."
Rich and full-bodied with a robust tannic structure, this wine features a harmonious blend of dark fruits—cherries, blackberries, and plums—interwoven with Mediterranean herbs. Pepper, clove, and a subtle earthiness add complexity, while flavours of black olive and liquorice complement the dark ripe fruits, creating a well-balanced profile. Its depth and intensity make it an excellent match for equally bold dishes such as grilled meats, lamb, hearty stews, and aged cheeses.
Founded in 1979 by winemaker André Roméro, Domaine la Soumade is a young, yet highly respected winery in the Rhône Valley that has quickly risen to become one of Rasteau's most distinguished producers. In 1996, André's son, Frédéric Roméro, joined the family estate, bringing new energy and continuing the legacy of winemaking.
