Having been asked to find some Chenin Blanc for a great friend's wedding, this one just smashed all the tastings, and it had to be added to the Whitfield Wine list — A sublime and elegant Chenin Blanc from Vouvray in France's Loire Valley. This wine represents a dry ‘sec’ style of Vouvray, while ‘Silex’ highlights the vineyard’s flinty soil.
Fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks at a cool temperature with a small proportion matured in barrel to add complexity, the terroir of this cuvée sometimes gives notes of "flint", which underline its mineral character, or a more fruity side in sunny years. Brilliant yellow in colour, with aromas of apple, pear and citrus, this Chenin is soft yet tangy, and there's tension between its weight and density and the crisp, acidic frame that carries it through to a lengthy finish. This wine pairs well with seafood, poultry, and vegetarian dishes.
The Vigneau family began cultivating vines from the Vouvray region in the late 19th century. Through marriage, the estate expanded with the Chevreau family, forming the Vigneau-Chevreau union and taking their joint family commitments to winemaking. Today, the estate is managed by the fifth generation of the family, with Christophe, Stéphane, and Benoît Vigneau continuing the legacy, producing great Vouvray wines.
