If you have followed the Whitfield Wines' list as it has developed, you will know I love Nebbiolo and constantly strive to find approachable, well priced wines that sing Nebbiolo quality from the rooftops and are drinking perfectly now; the Spetacol sits perfectly on that wish-list. Delicate, gentle, approachable and incredibly moreish, I couldn't resist bringing this insiders' wine to the Whitfield Wines list. It's a classic restaurant wine, and value for money for a brilliantly put together wine.

The Renato Fenocchio Farm is located in Neive, a small country region which is 10 kms from Alba. The vineyards are found in the hills of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, and have excellent exposure on the gentle hills of “Langhe”at varying altitudes -from 240 to 350 meters above the sea level. The extremely diverse soils give each vineyard a distinct character. They range from calcarious-clayey soils with sandy emergences in Barbaresco and Treiso to argillous-calcarious sedimentary ground with grey-blue sandstones in Neive. As a result of the various soil types and growing conditions the grapes produced in our vineyards are extremely different.

Nutmeg, dried strawberry and button mushroom come together on the palate with finessed, chalky tannins and a firm, spicy finish.

The food matches start with fatty, meat based pastas (all those tannins) but follow quickly with garlic, truffles, olives, capers, butternut squash, wild mushrooms, polenta, leeks, tomato-based sauces, and pizza all pair well with Nebbiolo.

Founded by Renato Fenocchio and his wife, Milva, the Renato Fenocchio Farm is located in Neive, a small country region which is 10 kms from Alba. The vineyards are found in the hills of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, and have excellent exposure on the gentle hills of Langhe at varying altitudes — from 240 to 350 metres above the sea level.

Distantly related to Giacomo Fenocchio in Barolo, this Barbaresco-based producer brings that zone's more refined and perfumed style to their Langhe.
