I discovered this wonderful wine on the revered wine list at The River Café. It is very hard to remove wines from the RC list as long-standing customers complain, so to add a completely new wine takes real star quality! The qualities Mauro brings to his winemaking produce fragrant wines with great structure. Stock is a touch limited, so this is always first come, first served.
A beautifully structured wine with exceptional aging potential, its intense garnet red hue reveals complex aromas of dried red fruits and delicate roses. The bright acidity is perfectly balanced by firm tannins, while underlying earthy notes add depth and character to the wine.
Founded in 1940 by Marco Franchino, this tiny, three-hectare estate was firmly in the control of his son, Mauro Franchino and he produced around 400 cases in a normal year, focussing on quality rather than quantity in their production. Although Barolo and Barbaresco have the reputation, Gattinara is in the heart of the Langhe and produces ethereal Nebbiolo wines without the price or craziness surrounding the more famous examples. Today, the estate is managed by the third generation, nephew Alberto Raviciotti.
