Grattomacco is the second-oldest estate in Bolgheri (founded 1977). Alongside Sassicaia, it helped define what the region’s coastal, Bordeaux-influenced reds could become. Its early commitment to quality earned it “founding producer” status. It has rare elevated vineyards. While much of Bolgheri is on the plain, Grattamacco’s vineyards sit on a hillside around 100–200 metres, giving cooler nights, natural freshness, and more tension in the wines.
On the nose, a sophisticated mix of citrus zest (lemon, lime), yellow grapefruit, white peach, green apple, and white flowers (jasmine, honeysuckle). Underneath you’ll also detect sea-spray salinity, wet stone/mineral notes, and a “Mediterranean scrub” herbal edge (sage, thyme) on the breeze.
On the palate, the wine enters with crisp, vibrant acidity that anchors a gently creamy texture (thanks to lees ageing and part oak). Flavours of orchard fruit (peach, golden apple), citrus, and white-stone fruit build, layered with saline minerality and subtle phenolic grip. The mid-palate has weight without heaviness.
