IDDA Bianco 2023 is produced by Gaja and Graci's joint venture, IDDA. In terms of why I am listing such a wine, it represents a fascinating intersection of a prestigious winery, a unique terroir, and an under appreciated grape variety (Carricante), making it a compelling and exciting addition to Whitfield Wines. As if that wasn't enough, it also sits on some really cool lists around London, including Harry's Bar and by the glass at the River Café.

The slopes of Etna are a wine maker's dream. The vineyards are planted on porous volcanic soil, rich in minerals like potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium. This soil contributes to the wines' distinctive mineral character and contributes to the vines' health and drainage; the vineyards are among the highest in Europe, grown at altitudes ranging from 600 to 800 meters above sea level.

These vineyards are located on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, specifically in the villages of Belpasso and Biancavilla. This altitude creates significant temperature variations between day and night, which helps grapes develop balanced acidity and aromatic complexity.

These are not conventional, fruity whites. They offer none of the tropical flavours sometimes associated with New World chardonnays, none of the peach and apricot of German rieslings, not even the tart twang of sauvignon blancs.

Instead, IDDA wines have a pronounced savory flavor — salty, in a word — that gives these wines a singular nature found nowhere else. They are high in acidity and relatively low in alcohol - around 12.5 percent - which makes them racy and refreshing.

Notes of tomato leaves, sage, Cantaloupe (melon) and quince at the first sniff. Followed by intriguing hints of honey and hay, yet a note of yeast and dough raises from the glass. The entrance is voluptuous and tight, yellow plum and pineapple enrich the palate with a sleek acidity. Clean-cut and savory on the mineral-laced finish.

Collaboration between Alberto Graci and Angelo Gaja.
