First discovering this in one of the best gastropubs in west London, this wine has spread its wings on the London restaurant scene and is now seen 'by-the-glass' around some of London's top restaurants. It is one of those wines that has universal appeal with its incredibly appealing signature combination of freshness and creaminess. It is a brilliant addition to any list as well as to your wine fridge.
Made with the rare but high quality local grape Nascetta, along with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and a little Riesling which are for the most planted together and then all vinified, creates a proper, traditional field blend quite unusual to see in Piedmont.
Italian artist and engraver, Gianni Gallo, drew the Dragon, a symbol of courage which he hoped for the Vajra family’s guardianship for Luigi Baudana.
Aromas of hawthorn, citrus and a hint of flint, on the palate, it is structured, with its signature balance between freshness and creaminess, concluding with a nice saline finish. It is incredibly moreish and is a classic house wine at home that works as an apéritif, or with salads, roast chicken, or all afternoon in the summer.
The Luigi Baudana winery is one of the smallest in the Barolo region, with just 6.4 acres of vineyards in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba. As the last in the Baudana family's lineage of winemakers, Luigi and his wife Fiorina entrusted their estate to the Vajra family in 2009. This transfer of stewardship to the Vajras—renowned for their exceptional Barolo under the G.D. Vajra label—ensured the continuation of Baudana's winemaking traditions. Aldo and Milena Vajra, along with their children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, oversee the estate, preserving its legacy.
