This wine introduces us to the Baga — Bairrada’s native grape variety as we have not been introduced to before, which is its light, lively and elegant side, so brilliantly crafted by the Niepoorts. The Baga grape with its bold, tannic, and high-acidity profile, a well-made Baga presents a balance between fruit and rustic flavours, which this Niepoort offering represents. This wine brings forward an orchard of red fruit flavours such as cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, alongside Baga’s characteristics of subtle earthy and herbal flavours most appreciated by those who enjoy a firm yet drinkable wine.
Founded in 1842 by Dutch merchant Eduard Kebe, the company soon became a joint venture with Francois Marius Niepoort, who later took full control. Francois passed the business to his son, Eduard Niepoort, who focused on producing fine Port wines. By the time the fifth generation, Dirk Niepoort, took the reins, the portfolio had expanded to include dry table wines crafted from native Portuguese grape varieties.
Today, Dirk Niepoort and the sixth generation—Daniel, Marco, and Ana Niepoort—work together to innovate and grow the family business.
