Calvarino, meaning ‘little calvary’, references the challenges in working the land and the complex hillside winding paths to reach the base. The wine is named after one of three specialist vineyards of the Pieropan family – Calvarino, La Rocca, and Garzon – situated in the heart of the Soave Classico vineyard area in Veneto, a region blessed with rich and fertile volcanic soils. 

An absolute classic of a restaurant wine, it is ever present on the best Italian wine lists around. Though, very well-known, the quality shines through here and makes it a must-have Whitfield Wine for the restaurant experience at home.

This is an outstanding Soave made from organically grown grapes that remain on lees in glass-lined cement tanks for a year, adding complexity and depth to the final wine. Displaying yellow hues of straw with gentle reflections of green, mineral and flowery aromas perfume through a bouquet of elderflower, aromatic herbs, almonds, and ripe citrus fruits. On the palate, flavours of green apple, almond, blossom and oyster shell.

Situated on the stony hills of the Soave Classico region in Veneto, Italy, the Pieropan family has been producing wines in the town of Soave since the 1890s. Leading the family estate to new heights was Leonildo 'Nino' Pieropan, leading many first accomplishments — they were the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label in the early 1930s; the first to make a native-grape white wine from a single-vineyard, Calvarino, in 1971; and the first to convert to organic farming in Soave, among other admirable achievements.

After the passing of Leonildo ‘Nino Pieropan in 2018, today, the estate is managed by his sons, Andrea and Dario, the fourth generation of the Pieropan family, continuing the family winemaking traditions with the same dedication and philosophy.
