This is one of those Piedmont wines that has to be on my list as an archetypal example of top notch nebbiolo, designed to be drunk young (hence works on restaurant wine lists) and just has that aura of a wine that will work on a focused restaurant wine list. Its just a cool wine, understated and effortless in his brilliance.
Produttori del Barbaresco is located in the Barbaresco region of Piedmont, Italy. It is a cooperative winery established in 1958 by a group of 19 growers who recognised the potential of the Barbaresco region and decided to join forces. It has grown to include over 50 members who collectively cultivate approximately 100 hectares of vineyards.
Put simply, a profound Langhe Nebbiolo, easily mistaken for a Barbaresco if tasted blind.
Red and black fruits mingle on the nose, along with hints of summer herbs. Surprisingly full and mouth-filling on the palate, serious depth of red summer fruits, coupled with something darker, spice and hints of undergrowth. Bright acidity and fine-grained tannins round this off. Long and refined on the finish.
Produttori del Barbaresco is a peerless co-operative that can take a lot of credit for helping the Barbaresco DOCG gain a reputation not far short of its neighbour Barolo. In 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the best way for the small properties of the village to prosper was by joining forces, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. The first three vintages were made in the church basement and then in the winery built across the square from where the Produttori is still located. United once again, the small growers continued the work started by Domizio Cavazza, producing only Barbaresco wine and enhancing both the reputation of the wine and the village. The Produttori del Barbaresco now has more than 50 members and over 100 hectares of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation, which amounts to almost a sixth of the vineyards of the area. The highly respected Aldo Vacca has been at the helm for over 25 years.
