At Whitfield Wines' most recent tasting, this rich energetic complex Syrah from the foothills of the Alps was described by an oenophile as the 'wine of the night’. This Non Expedit Syrah by Elio Ottin of Vallée d'Aoste fame is new to these shores, and is sure to be a big hit on restaurant lists around the capital. They make a crystalline, delicious expression of Pinot Noir — also available on Whitfield Wines — and this Syrah, wow.
I would say it is most similar to a modern Cornas from Northern Rhône. It has that level of intensity and fruit ripeness; though, still pure and fresh, and without the layered oak that many of them carry. Importantly, though, it's about half the price of a half decent Cornas! Incredible, given the vines have just produced their first vintage.
The Ottin family have a deep connection with the land in the Aosta Valley through livestock and farming. Cultivating grapes in the late 1980s and selling his grapes, Elio Ottin began bottling his own wine in 2007, crafting unique wines reflecting the character of the Aosta Valley, where the wines benefit from the high altitude and sunny slopes with sea winds for freshness and salinity. The vines are grown on pergolas and the grapes here produce medium bodied, aromatic wines.
