Back in 2021, a brilliant connoisseur friend spent several weeks around Montalcino is Southern Tuscany, searching for consistency, value and quality all wrapped into one Brunello producer that would work across the restaurant trade in London.
The Cortonesi wines were the result of that search - news of these wines moved fast in London restaurants, and these wines are seen often now - a wonderful Brunello which shows up on alot of lists in London because of its incredible value for money, and the brilliant quality of the wine.
The Brunello is of course made entirely from Sangiovese and is aged for 40 months in large oak barrels, then a further six months in bottle, before release. It has a very delicate colour and offers a tight knit, bitter cherry fruit character.
A luscious Brunello with bountiful aromas of dark fruit with dried cherry, blackcurrant and plum.
Ona second wave of aromas, you encounters ofter spice with toasted almond, tilled earth and grilled herb. This is a balanced classic expression of the hot 2018 vintage.
The Cortonesi family has long been involved in agriculture, cultivating grapes and olives, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that they shifted their focus to winemaking under the family name. A key milestone was the acquisition of the La Mannella vineyard, located on the northern slopes of Montalcino, a region renowned for producing aromatic Sangiovese grapes. Since then, the family has been dedicated to the production of Brunello di Montalcino. In the late 1990s, Tommaso Cortonesi took over operations, concentrating on producing higher-quality Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino while expanding the estate with additional vineyards across Montalcino.
