Barolo Cascina Nuova Elvio Cogno 2017
This is the famous Barolo producer’s entry level Barolo and is incredible in its accessibility now. ‘Ethereal’ is a word often used around Nebbiolo wines, it is an autumnal and savoury wine.
Barolo Cascina Nuova shows that even the youngest vineyards can produce an excellent Barolo, albeit easily accessible, more immediate and of wide appeal. Aimed at a broader public that wants to get to know the wine gradually before moving on to more complex examples, it might even be defined as a lesson in Barolo. Of course, this wine will age, but it is built be Elvio Cogno to be drunk now. It is no wonder it is almost impossible to buy in the UK currently.
2017 was a wonderful vintage in Piedmont, a nice follow up to the great 2016 releases. A warm year but plenty of water reserves and some timely rain saved the vines from any stress.
The vines of Cascina Nuova are spread over 1.5 ha, facing the Cogno farmhouse and winery in Novello.
Spent two years in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by six months in bottle. Look for intense flavours of cherry, tar and liquorice and a lifted balsamic character. Bottled unfiltered so decant.
Special occasion wine, but an unbelievable good value Barolo. In regards to restaurants, the wine is sold at Gymkhana and 5 Hertford Street.
