Gigondas 'Les Fouilles', Domaine Burle, Rhône 2022
So many WW customers loved the Rasteau (La Soumade) that I told you about at Christmas that I thought rather than looking for other fuller body reds from Northern Rhône, I would suggest another Rhône beauty from the south, with the Gigondas name being so recognisable and it being in peppery contrast to all the Pinot noir I have in the letter every time.
Gigondas of course is a brasserie favourite; top quality Gigondas that you would find in London brasseries at fair prices is a rarity these days, so please do stock up for consumption at home.
Damien and Florent Burle took over the running of the estate from their father Edmond in 2004. Their style is rusticity at its best. There is no de-stemming, and the wines have bags of fruit and guts. This is 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache from a single 1-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines situated at a high altitude.
