Piedmont’s reputation rests on some of Italy’s most profound and elegant wines. On my ongoing quest to track down value and exceptional quality from famous regions, I am delighted to show you these two beauties.
Timorasso is one of Piedmont’s most compelling native white grapes, producing textured, mineral wines with lovely savoury, saline notes that have an affinity with lees ageing.
Carlo Manera's Timorasso “La Battistina’ is really elegant, all citrus and apricot with nutty mineral notes, and bright acidity, almost Riesling-like qualities. Wine of this quality below £20 must be acquired, and fast.
Alto Piemonte has been a wine making region for over 2000 years, far longer than the more famous neighbouring Barolo appellation. I adore its cooler, higher altitude vineyards producing Nebbiolo with fragrance, freshness and finesse, without the crazy prices.
Tenute Sella has been making wine here only relatively recently, since 1671. Its ‘Orbello’ 2024, is on the list at Luca and The Cow, and was recently added at my new favourite Soho restaurant, the sensational Impala (you have to go).
